SBC Communications Inc., is a holding company whose subsidiaries provide wireline and wireless telecommunications services and equipment, directory advertising, electronic security services and cable television services. The #2 local phone outfit in the US after Verizon, SBC has 57 million phone lines in 13 states. Its biggest markets are California (formerly Pacific Bell), Texas (Southwestern Bell), and Illinois (Ameritech). The company has combined its US wireless operations with those of Bellsouth to form Cingular Wireless, which has 22 million subscribers in 38 states. Other services include long-distance with more than 14 million customers and Internet access. It is a leader in providing DSL broadband services with 3.5 million subscribers.
